In motorsport, talent matters. But let’s be honest, talent alone won’t guarantee you a seat or a sponsor. If you want to stand out and secure motorsport sponsorships as a driver or co-driver, building a strong personal brand on social media is a game-changer.
At Rally Stages, we've grown our audience from zero to millions of views using short-form content, and we’re here to share what’s worked for us. Whether you’re rallying, circuit racing or karting, these tips apply across the board.
Step 1: Understand Why Social Media Matters
Sponsors aren’t just looking for fast drivers. They want visibility, engagement, and someone who can help amplify their brand. Your social media presence is a direct way to offer that. It’s your digital CV, your portfolio, and your pitch deck all rolled into one.
Step 2: Be Consistent
If you take one thing away from this blog, let it be this: consistency is key. Post regularly, whether it’s once a week, once a day or somewhere in between. Just stick to it.
We post daily across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, and the growth has been huge. Our combined audience is now over 25,000 followers and we’ve had more than 5 million views in just 90 days. That didn’t happen overnight. It happened because we kept showing up.
Step 3: Use Short-Form Video to Grow Fast
Short-form video is the most powerful format right now. It’s how you grab attention, get into people’s feeds, and grow quickly. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts are built to push this content.
In-car clips are great, but they need something extra: a punchy title, a quick voiceover or a trending sound. Here’s a good example from us: Watch Example
Step 4: Cross-Post to All Platforms
Make once, post everywhere. If you create a video for TikTok, save it and post it to Instagram and YouTube too. Each platform has a slightly different audience, but the content can be the same.
This multiplies your reach without multiplying your workload.
Step 5: Tailor Your Content Per Platform
That said, think about how people use each platform:
- LinkedIn: Great for targeting sponsors, showing the business side of your journey
- Instagram/TikTok/YouTube: Focused on entertainment, personality, and getting noticed by fans and brands alike
Post the same content, but tweak the caption, tone or call to action depending on where you’re posting.
Step 6: Edit Ruthlessly
The best videos are short, sharp and punchy. Edit your clips down to the essentials. Rewatch your own videos and ask yourself: "Would I keep watching this if it wasn't me?"
Our most successful videos are usually under 10 seconds long. Viewers are impatient, so you have to grab them quickly.
Step 7: Put Your Face in the Frame
People connect with people, not logos. Get yourself on camera. Talk to your audience, even if it’s just in voiceovers or quick clips.
We do this through podcast clips and personal videos. It helps build trust, shows your personality, and makes brands more likely to work with you. Here’s an example that worked well: Podcast Clip Example
Step 8: Use Trends Authentically
Trends help boost reach, especially with music and formats. But don’t force it. Use trending audio or styles that fit your personality and content. People can spot when you’re trying too hard.
Step 9: Build a Community, Not Just a Following
Reply to comments, ask questions, get people involved. The goal isn’t just to go viral. It’s to create a space where people want to follow your journey, and where sponsors want to be part of your story.
Step 10: Study What Works and Adapt
Look at your stats. What gets views, what gets likes, what gets people talking? Do more of that.
And look at others too. If a driver you admire is smashing it on socials, study how they do it and borrow ideas that suit your style.
